Wireless Bit Map

The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) calls for very different specifications than the Web, therefore all content geared toward wireless users must be adapted for use on mobile computing devices. One such adaptation is the WirelessBitMap, but what is it and how do you modify your existing images?
The Wireless Application Forum introduced a wireless image standard known as the Wireless BitMap (WBMP), a format that is optimized for use by handheld devices. WBMPs use a TypeField value, which describes encoding information like pixel and palette organization, animation and compression and also determines image characteristics in accordance with the WAP specification. Such values are represented by an ImageType Identifier. The Image Type Identifier label for supported WBMP files is 0 - currently the only type that a WAP device supports.

0 has the following characteristics:

  • No compression
  • One bit color (white=1, black=0)
  • One bit deep (monochrome)
