     Abbreviation of Windows New Technology, a 32-bit multitasking operating system developed by Microsoft Corporation and released at the end of 1992. WindowsNT is scalable and designed for use on a broad range of platforms, including high-end workstations. WindowsNT consists of two versions - the basic product and the WindowsNT Advanced Server. As such, the operating system has been positioned by Microsoft for client-server computing over networked systems.
     The most advanced version of the Windows operating system, WindowsNT is a 32-bit operating system that supports preemptive multitasking. There are actually two versions of Windows NT: WindowsNT Server, designed to act as a server in networks, and WindowsNT Workstation for stand-alone or client workstations.
