"Peripheral Components Microcomputer Interface Adapter" or "Personal Computer memory card international association." The standard for connecting peripherals to small computers. Laptop computers are, on the whole, too small to accept a standard plug-in board, so if you want to fit, say, a network adapter, you will need to obtain a PCMCIA one. A PCMCIA slot take a plug-in unit about the size of a fat credit card. This unit way contain all the electronics or, for more complex devices, simply provide the connections to an external unit.
