UUCP was developed by Mike Lesk in 1978 at the AT&T Bell Labratories. Since then, its use has expanded greatly. However, with the incorporation of the TCP/IP protocol, the Internet has detracted interest from UUCP. In recent years, UUCP growth has leveled off, showing the replacement of UUCP by the Internet. Once dialed up, UUCP sends new mail from the gateway to the host, where it is uploaded. Internet email is downloaded, the line is disconnected, and mail is sent to the LAN postoffice. It is then distributed to user mailboxes. Originally, the connection route was required specification by the sender, a practice called source code routing. However, a program, Pathalias, can now find an appropriate route for the sender. |
