An increasing number of customers wish to connect their machines to their mobile phones. We will try to highlight the requirements for this, and the difficulties that may be incurred also.

The handsets (i.e. the mobile phone itself) must be data compatible, (see table below).
The network operator (e.g. Orange, Cellnet, Vodafone or One2One (there are others but they are sub networks maintained by the aforementioned four)) must support a data connection on your tariff (billing plan), you may have to request this service be turned on, this may incur and extra charge.
Additional equipment may be required, which is not supplied with either the Laptop or the Mobile Phone, (this includes DATA CABLES and SOFTWARE).
THE MAIN ISSUE AT HAND HERE, IS THE NUMBER OF VARIABLES IN THIS EQUASION! WHICH CAN MAKE MATTERS VERY VERY COMPLICATED.

     NOTE: Over 90% of PRE-PAY vouchers (Just talk, Up2u, Smart-step), will not be able to use mobile data, as the phones are not compatible and the operators do not support this service. Also it is not economical to do, as pre-pay tends to be much more expensive for calls, and even 0800 calls are charged at the operators standard rate.
     Nokia are the number one manufacturer in the world of mobile phones and as a result sell more than any other company. As a result of this their phones tend to be the easiest to connect to a Laptops, but as mentioned previously there may also be other factors at hand that make this more complicated.
     With regards to the other main phone manufactures, (i.e. Motorola, and Erricson) they tend to be a lot more difficult to set up as the software on the handsets are not as user friendly as that of Nokia. The connection media (cables and software) is not as user friendly and takes a lot of time to configure. Also their solutions tend to be less cost effective.

8210, 8210e	Software must be downloaded from Club Nokia, or the Nokia forum. This phone has a hardware modem, which can be used out of the box via the IR port, with the addition of software.
8250, 8290	Software must be downloaded from Club Nokia, or the Nokia forum. This phone has a hardware modem, which can be used out of the box via the IR port, with the addition of software.
9000 Communicator	Software provided in the box, this phone has a hardware modem, which can be used out of the box via the IR port, although a cable is available.
9110 Communicator	Software provided in the box, this phone has a hardware modem, which can be used out of the box via the IR port, although a cable is available.
9210 Communicator	Software provided in the box, this phone has a hardware modem, which can be used out of the box via the IR port, although a cable is available.
Card phone 1	PCMCIA card and drivers supplied.
Card phone 2	PCMCIA card and drivers supplied.
Timeport (most Timeport phones are data compatible, but there are some exceptions. Mainly in the lower end of the market.	Most Timeport's are provided with software and come with a built in IR port, although cables are also available.
