A Wave file is an audio file format, created by Microsoft, that has become a standard PC audio file format for everything from system and game sounds to CD-quality audio. A Wave file is identified by a file name extension of WAV (.wav). Used primarily in PCs, the Wave files format has been accepted as a viable interchange medium for other computer platforms, such as Macintosh. WAV flies stored on your hard disk may be added to your desktop either as a single sound file or as part of a play list. When Windows installs, it loads several WAV files in c:\windows\media that you can start to edit and manipulate. You can find the folder by double clicking My Computer, then on C drive, followed by Windows and finally Media. Because WAV files are usually uncompressed, they are quite large when you attempt to create long sound files. For example, a short one-second sound, like a Windows Alert, will be under a few hundred Kilobytes. If you attempt to record a whole song, you can make the WAV files about 60Mb, and so it's wiser to look into MP3 compression or something similar. |
