What is DPMS? Display Power Management System Suspend On Off
Display Power Management System

The major part of the power consumed by a typical computer with a CRT monitor is used by the monitor itself. If, in periods of inactivity, the monitor could have parts of its circuitry powered-down, a substantial power saving could result. DPMS is a standard produced by VESA which defines four levels of monitor power consumption: On, Standby, Suspend and Off. The idea is that manufacturers of monitors will produce them with the special circuitry enabling control to be exercised by routines added to the computer's Bios.
