     A type of display wherein a voltage potential is applied to electrodes that surround a special type of liquid the optical transmission of which changes from transparent to opaque depending on the voltage applied to the electrodes. The advantage of this type of display over others is that it requires very little electrical power to operate such that it results in very little drain on the battery of portable equipment. Thanks to display technology, the world is going flat. No, it's not deflating, nor was Columbus wrong (or at least not entirely). It's our desktop displays that are getting flat-- buyers have decided that flatter is better, and flat-screen sales have gone through the roof. How did this happen, and what impact might these developments have on your future purchases? Liquid Crystal Displays LCDs, it's the technology that has driven these changes. In passing, however, we should note that the cathode ray tube (CRT) manufacturers have done what they could to fight back. In addition to dropping CRT monitor prices drastically over recent years, the companies have also developed display tubes with flat faces that are designed to give the user an experience similar to an LCD monitor.
