What is Aperture?

What is Aperture? Adjustable Opening Admit Light Camera Film
An Adjustable Opening

An adjustable opening that works with the shutter to admit light into a camera. A large aperture allows more light to hit the sensor or film; a small aperture allows less light. If you're outside on a sunny day, the small apertures ensures you don't get an overexposed shot. If you're shooting at dusk, you'd want to open the apertures to allow more light so you don't get an underexposed picture.
Most digital cameras come with a selection of preset aperture / shutter combinations. These presets are generally accessed through the menu settings.
